How to move forward when you feel uncertain

“Be where your feet are.”

That is one of the quotes on the wall near my desk. I find it to be a good reminder to focus on the present moment.

That doesn’t mean you can’t plan or think about the future.

It’s the realization that the “future” only exists in your mind and whatever energy you are bringing to the present is probably what your “future” will feel like. If you’re rushing now, it’s likely your “future” will feel rushed. If you are in the flow state now, it’s likely your “future” holds more of that.

But if you’re like me, sometimes it can feel impossible to take a step forward without some guarantee of where it will take you.

My mind would love to see what exactly lies ahead in order to be sure that what I am doing now is “worth it.”

But I can never actually get any answer about the future unless I take action now. I could sit at my computer forever wondering if I should do something or not.

Fear would love for me to do that.

Or, I could acknowledge the uncertainty, bring my best energy to this moment, take action and see what happens.

It’s really like walking on a foggy day.

Even on the foggiest of days the step that you can take right now in front of you is usually clear. You might not be able to see 50 feet in front of you, but you can see your feet right now.

You have a choice.

You can stand still and wonder and worry about what is 50 feet ahead that you can’t see and refuse to step forward until it’s all crystal clear.

Or, you can start walking and realize that every time you take a step…the area around you is clear. If you keep doing that, roughly 50 steps later you can see for yourself what is “50 feet ahead.”

When life feels foggy, focusing on what is happening right now - one step at a time - is the only way forward.

Whether it’s a quote on your wall or a foggy day - anything that encourages you to look at the step you are taking now - and not too far ahead - is pointing you in the right direction.

The way forward is to know your final goal as a guide, but to focus on what you are doing now.

And to not let fear or uncertainty convince you that you should not move at all.
